Why scaling content creation without SEO governance creates compounding technical debt

Here’s a scenario we see repeatedly with high-growth fintech and SaaS companies. The marketing team is producing content at scale. Knowledge bases are expanding. Blog posts are published weekly. Press announcements go out regularly. The content machine is humming along beautifully.

Then someone runs a technical SEO audit and discovers that the site has grown from 1,300 pages to over 2,000 pages in six months, with a corresponding explosion in technical issues. Worse still, many of those issues are being created by the very team responsible for growing organic traffic.

This isn’t a story about incompetence. It’s about what happens when content operations scale faster than SEO governance. And it’s particularly common in fintech, where documentation, knowledge bases, and regulatory content create unique challenges.

The Audit Paradox

One of the most frustrating conversations in SEO goes something like this: “We did an audit six months ago and fixed the issues. Now we’ve done another audit, and there are more issues than before. What’s going on?”

The answer is usually straightforward once you dig into the data. The original pages that were audited and fixed are actually in much better shape. The problem is that hundreds of new pages have been created since the last audit, and those new pages are arriving with issues baked in from day one.

This creates a perverse situation where your SEO team is essentially auditing their own organisation’s work. New content gets published with missing meta descriptions, duplicate titles, or incorrect indexing settings. The SEO team flags the issues. They get fixed. More content is published with the same problems. The cycle continues.

The only way to break this cycle is to fix the process that creates the pages, not just the pages themselves.

Template inheritance: The hidden culprit

When a template has a “noindex” tag set (perhaps intentionally for a specific use case), every page created from that template inherits the noindex setting. When a template has placeholder text in the meta description field, every derivative page inherits that placeholder. When a template is missing structured data, so is every page built from it.

The fix sounds simple: audit your templates. In practice, this means identifying every template used for content creation across blogs, knowledge bases, press announcements, documentation, and product pages. Each template needs to be checked for SEO hygiene, and content creators need to understand which fields they must customise for each new page.

The indexing question: Not everything should rank

A common misconception is that more indexed pages equal better SEO performance. In reality, indexing pages with no search value dilutes your site’s overall quality signals and wastes crawl budget.

Login pages, internal documentation, sandbox environments, duplicate content, and backend administrative pages should typically not be indexed. When Google crawls these pages and finds thin content or no unique value, it affects how the algorithm perceives your entire domain.

The challenge for fintech companies is that they often have substantial documentation that sits in a grey area. API documentation might be valuable for search visibility among developers. Customer support articles might attract organic traffic. Sandbox tutorials might rank for technical queries. The decision of what to index requires strategic thinking, not blanket rules.

A practical approach is to categorise your content types and make explicit indexing decisions for each category. Public-facing blogs and thought leadership should be indexed. Logged-in user documentation probably should not. Regulatory compliance pages may need case-by-case evaluation based on their search potential.

Sitemaps and Google Search Console: What actually matters

Your sitemap is essentially a request to Google: “Please crawl and consider indexing these pages.” Pages not in your sitemap can still be discovered and indexed through internal links, but the sitemap signals which pages you consider most important.

We frequently see confusion about the relationship between sitemaps, Google Search Console data, and actual indexing status. Google Search Console shows “all known pages” (everything Google has discovered) and “submitted pages” (those in your sitemap). These are different numbers, and understanding the gap is crucial.

If you have significantly more “known pages” than “submitted pages,” Google is finding content you haven’t explicitly told it about. Sometimes this is fine because those are pages you don’t want indexed anyway. Sometimes it indicates orphaned content, redirect chains, or parameter-based URL variations that are creating crawl inefficiency.

The key question is: who manages your sitemap? In many organisations, nobody has explicit ownership. Pages get added automatically by the CMS, or they don’t get added at all because the default settings weren’t configured correctly. This needs to be someone’s responsibility.

Manual indexing requests: When and why

Google eventually finds and indexes most public pages through normal crawling. But “eventually” can mean days or weeks, and for time-sensitive content like press announcements or product launches, you may want to accelerate the process.

Manual indexing requests through Google Search Console essentially ask Google to prioritise crawling a specific URL. This is useful for new pages you want indexed quickly, pages that have been significantly updated, or pages that are showing as “crawled but not indexed” despite having unique, valuable content.

However, manual indexing requests are not a substitute for good technical SEO. If a page isn’t being indexed because it has thin content, duplicate content, or a noindex tag, requesting indexing won’t help. Google will crawl it, determine it shouldn’t be indexed, and you’ll be back where you started.

Measuring progress: Apples to apples comparisons

One of the hardest aspects of SEO auditing is demonstrating progress when the goal posts keep moving. If you had 1,300 pages and 200 issues, then grew to 2,000 pages and 250 issues, did things get better or worse?

The honest answer requires segmentation. You need to be able to answer: Of the original 1,300 pages, how many issues remain? What percentage of the new 700 pages have issues? Are the issues on new pages coming from specific content types or templates?

Most SEO tools audit the entire site without distinguishing between old and new content. Creating these segmented views requires additional work, but it’s the only way to demonstrate that remediation efforts are actually working while also identifying where process improvements are needed.

A practical approach is to export your page list at each audit and use date-based filtering to separate pages that existed at the previous audit from those created since. This allows you to track issue resolution rates on existing content separately from issue introduction rates on new content.

Building SEO into content operations

The fundamental shift required is moving from reactive SEO (auditing and fixing after the fact) to proactive SEO (building requirements into content creation workflows). This means several things in practice.

First, content templates need SEO review before they’re approved for use. Every template should have the correct default indexing settings, required meta fields that cannot be left blank, and structured data appropriate to the content type.

Second, content creators need basic SEO training. They don’t need to become SEO experts, but they should understand why unique titles and descriptions matter, what noindex means, and when to ask questions about a new page type they’re creating.

Third, there needs to be a pre-publication checklist that catches common issues. This doesn’t have to be burdensome. A simple five-point checklist covering title uniqueness, description presence, indexing settings, internal links, and canonical tags catches most problems before they reach production.

Fourth, someone needs to own SEO governance. This person doesn’t do all the work, but they’re responsible for ensuring processes exist, templates are compliant, and content teams are following guidelines.

The compounding cost of delay

Technical SEO debt compounds over time. Every month that new content publishes with issues is another month of remediation work that accumulates. Every quarter without process fixes means hundreds more pages requiring individual attention.

The companies that maintain strong SEO performance at scale are those that treat it as an operational discipline, not a periodic project. Regular audits matter, but they’re diagnostic tools, not solutions. The solution is building SEO requirements into the systems and processes that create content in the first place.

For fintech companies in particular, where content volume tends to be high and content types diverse, this operational approach is essential. Knowledge bases, regulatory documentation, product updates, developer resources, and marketing content all have different SEO requirements. Trying to manage this complexity through periodic audits alone is a losing battle.
